Eighteen

Day after day, week after week, Martials came to Thaniel’s door and dragged him to Death. He endured the ice and the fire. Alone in the shadows he sang his little bird to sleep.

His skin was damaged, red, raw, and shredded. His joints throbbed and ached from his cramped prison cell. He still cried from the pain, enduring the numerous douses had not made him magically immune, but he felt stronger somehow. Knowing that Ares was giving these bastards hell beyond these walls and with the bird’s life being nursed slowly by his own hands, Thaniel spat in Death’s face and cried with anger, each day building a wall of defiance around his once fragile heart.

He couldn’t say how long he had been trapped in this place, more than a month he’d guess, perhaps even two. In some ways it felt like eternity. Thaniel sat huddled beside his little friend when the lights flickered on and he jolted to his feet quick to move away from the hidden nest but he wasn’t quite quick enough.

His cell door swung open and the Martial stared at him with knowing eyes. Sweeping them to the corner he’d just fled she tilted her head and took a step towards his bundled shirt. The image of Gran’s screaming face surged forth in his mind and for the first time in his life instincts moved Thaniel faster than lightning directly into the path of danger.

He held his ground blocking the Martial from entering his cell and moving any closer to the resting bird. Her arm reached out to push him aside but he twisted away and barreled into her with all of his strength pushing until she slammed to the ground. The other Martial tried to pull him off but Thaniel bit his hand and kicked him hard in the shin. He let out a yelp of pain before he took off running. Thaniel punched the Martial below him until his knuckles were bloody. Screams echoed through the hall and he only just realized that they were his.

It’s then, in the midst of a fight, that he suddenly found it odd that they didn’t have guns or stunners strapped to their belts, but it was a fleeting thought because adrenaline pounded through his veins and he was smashing the Martial’s face in until suddenly strong arms hauled him back by his hair and he cried out in pain, tears stinging his eyes.

Thaniel blinked rapidly and he saw the Death Martial dragging him off the limp form he’d bloodied. The snitch who’d run for help stood behind Death with a grim face marring his brow.

“I’ll contact the Head Inspector, he ought to know—”

Death released Thaniel and in a swift motion they’d snapped the Martial’s neck between their gloved grasp. Striding inside his cell Death picked up the tiny bundle, placing the bird in their pocket, and placing the cloth tightly over the moaning Martial’s face until she at last went still.

Thaniel’s brain had hardly any time to process the two bodies in the hall or that the Death Martial had killed them.
